I think what made Hemingway able to see this is because he fundamentally understands where his writing comes from and that Fitzgerald too might be coming from there. I know a lot of people like this, they’re mostly artists. They put on a mask to interface with the world, it might be, satire, sarcastic, and other seemingly disingenuous traits. However, if you stop, listen and get behind that, you can discover some of the most beautiful human beings. In this, as you say, it starts to inspire, and shape who you are.
